History of the Whip.
![]()
Many of you may know the Whiplash has been a phoenix and literally rose from the ashes. But for those of you don't know how the Whip has evolved or for those of you who just wish to stroll down memory lane the is the story as understood by Dread...
In 1993 a Rush rode the Orange Whip and to coin a fraise got the bug. In 1994 he brought the Orange Whip to race in the 94 season. The bike was previous built in 1992 and raced by Nottingham Custom Cycles, Rush was normally a Triumph man but was unable to turn down the bike had ridden.

At this time the bike was running methanol and nitrous oxide. In the first race of 94 the engine blew, but Rush was undeterred the bike rebuilt and away again. He then hit the center wall etc etc the story would put most people off competing for life. But not Rush, later in the season mid run he thought the bike felt hot. Not realising how hot he carried on, the flames caught his eye so he tried to bat the out. The engine had backfired busting the carb and it was spewing fuel into the flames and all over Rush's leg.
As the pain increase he had the choice ditch it or stop it. Both would hurt, he opted for the latter but ended up in hospital badly burned requiring 7 skin grafts. Given the right expertise both rider and machine could be repaired.

Rush had always wanted the Whip to look better than it did, so many long days and nights followed and thanks to the support of Kerry his partner and many friends "The Whiplash" rose from the ashes.
The Orange Whip had managed a very respectable 10.5 seconds and 128mph best time. Time to improve things.
This incarnation saw the Whip with a super charger mounted at the front of the bike and a huge 900ishcc engine and a 5 speed box. Below you can clearly see the super charger and carb set up. Also note the bike had a magneto (Top front of the engine). The new whiplash runs a battery instead, the mag never quite worked right.
Since then the constant evolution has seen the Whip turn into a more stable and predictable 750cc 3 speed machine. The Super charger is now at the rear of the engine.
2000/2001 saw constant clutch problems, I'm not a techy but the fuel melted the glue holding the plates together or something like that. So Rush has developed a new clutch which if you follow The Engine you can find a little more about.
The 2001 Whiplash has ran 9.4 and 150mph which makes it the fast XS650 in the world.
What will 2002 hold. The gossip says a new two speed box is being fitted, a fuel injection system added and possibly an on board diagnostic computer. I also believe a new body shell and paint job is just around the corner. Now I'm not one for gossip but I do have all this from a very reliable source... Watch this space to see if the Whip can make it into the 8's.
