Super series round 2

17th-18th June

Avon park Raceway

Long Marston

Stratford upon Avon

This was a mixed meet with cars and bikes, the weather was awesome 33 degrees. In the stands we burnt to a crisp with the sun pounding down on our backs. On the Sunday I hid under an umbrella for the day because I couldn't stand the heat on me.

As you can see from the thumbnails above there were all types of vehicles from street cars to top fuel rails. The wheeling corvette was quite a show, the guy kept it up for nearly the length of the track.

superseries10.JPG (61586 bytes) I spotted this very nice Z900 in the camping area. All standard apart from the 4 into 1 exhaust, it was one of the best condition Zed's I've ever come across.

We've got an extra interest in drag racing as one of my mates "Rush" has a bike and races in the top fuel class of the Supertwins.

Here's Kevin sat upon Rush's Top Fuel Yamaha XS650. This helped make Kev's weekend.

rush being towed.JPG (63466 bytes) Rush being towed down to line. Tech bit:- The bike is so thirsty and the tank so small he can't ride it to the line because he wouldn't have enough fuel left to do the quarter.

rush burn out.JPG (63568 bytes) Rush burns out before a run. This was a solo run because he got a by into the next round. So will he go for it or just a slow run up track.

Imagine at this point it's 33 degrees, the pressure of the race is on and you've been stood around in full racing leathers and helmet. Not to mention the heat from screaming engine below you. I'd probably pass out.

9.95 and 136mph a nice run. A reaction time of .4 something.

rushes rival.JPG (51410 bytes) It became evident very quickly that a show down between this massive Harley and Rushes 650 Yamaha was going to happen. The two guys put quicker and quicker times in. This Harley was a bike brought from the states and is capable of low 8's however the early races it became obvious the pilot was not yet sure of it. He started with a 12 second run the a quicker run then a low 9. Would Rush's Tiny engined rocket pull this one off ? Rush had gone quicker and quicker but times in the high 9's. He was consistent the Harley wasn't. Only time would tell, but sure enough they met in the final....

rushfinal1.JPG (47159 bytes) The final, as you can see Rush was up against it at the half way stage.

superseries11.JPG (46162 bytes)Rush put in his best time and was catching the big Harley on the second half of the track. But he didn't manage to do it this time. This could be the beginning of a very interesting battle for the rest of the season.
