Super series round 2
![]()
May 19th-20th 2001
Shakespeare County Raceway
Long Marston
Stratford upon Avon
This meet gave us chance to see the fastest street cars go head to head. There was also a strong presence on the bike scene from Europe and the British land speed record holder.
But before I go any further I must say the weather was awesome, the sun beat down on us (I remembered my baseball cap, so no slap head!) and there was no wind. Perfect for a good sticky track.
Split second the British land speed record holder was testing this weekend. Another jet propelled car, the novelty is wearing of for me, flames and whoosh gone. But you know what they say, it takes all types.... I was disappointed 200mph was all it did over the quarter. When it got the record it had a two mile track, lets face it it's that bloody long that on the quarter the front id nearly crossing the line when the engine passes the start line!
Below are some of the fine bikes over from Europe...
I
didn't see this happen but I got a picture of the car afterwards. I'm not sure
where on the track things went wrong but the hot rod below ended up on its roof.
The driver a lady was unhurt, and they say we will see the car again later in
the season. Good luck on repairing it is all I can say, look forward to seeing
the finished machine.
I
wish this was in black and white, it reminds me of old films and footage you get
from the 50's.
There was some fine racing with few breakages (we'll go into this a little later.) So it was non stop entertainment.
Being a Z1300 rider I'm a little loathed to put the these two pictures on my site, but as CBX 1000's go this one is nice.
Throughout the weekend it looked like there was going to be a show down in the street legal car section. Last years quickest, the black Saab and what could be this years quickest. In round one the Saab won because the new Calibra jumped the start light, but the Calibra was running incredible times this round. But in the semi final round the Saab through down the gauntlet showing every one he meant business.
What
you have to remember is that these two cars are road legal an run 155+ in a
quater of a mile.
This
picture doesn't tell the true tale, start line nerves struck again. The Calibra
who had ran 160+ on the day jumped the lights and lost the final again. So
experience and a cool head have allowed the Saab to go even further ahead on the
points scale. But watch this space and see what happens over the rest of the
series. I'm sure the tide will turn.
What about Supertwins and Rush and here you say?
The official statement from Rush as I looked disbelievingly at the shattered insides of the "Whiplash" was "Too much power! It ran great but too much power."
The metal shards on the inside of the casings are what is left of clutch. He's now got 4 weeks to design, fabricate, fit and test a new stronger clutch. Fingers crossed then.
X.Terminator and Dave Witts went on to win this round, two out of two for the new combination of bike and rider. Well done Dave, but watch out as Rush is talking a good fight.
